Mapping your Supply Chain for a Network Design exercise

As Supply Chain optimization professionals, we are often so deeply involved in the granularities of algorithms or the datasets for our models that we often overlook the importance of one critical piece of documentation that every analytics department within the Supply Chain function should have-An end to end, high level map of your Supply Chain with key business data.

As analytics professionals, it is critical that we should have the ability to see the trees as well as the forest i.e we should have both the operational as well as the strategic view of the end to end Supply Chain.  An end to end mapping of your Supply Chain with relevant data can provide you exactly that view.

To illustrate some of the key pieces of data that you need to capture in an end to end Supply Chain mapping exercise, that will come handy when you are working on scoping a network design exercise, we can use a very simple Supply Chain example shown below.

The illustrations below lists some of the key pieces of data that your Supply Chain analytics team should be really familiar with. The illustrations are self explanatory so I will not put additional verbiage in the post just for the sake of it.

Though the list of potential areas to look into provided in the illustrations above is not exhaustive and is rather generic, it provides a good overview of the kind of end to end perspective your analytics team needs to develop to deliver Network design and optimization projects successfully and efficiently.
